Symphyotrichum cordifolium ‘Chieftain’ bears masses of small, single pale lilac-blue flowers from September into October and beyond. The flowers are carried at the tips of dark green, branching stems, giving this tall perennial an airy, slightly informal appearance.
It suits the back of a herbaceous or cottage garden border. Tough and hardy, it tolerates salt-laden air but may need staking in exposed positions. Try planting it with taller ornamental grasses such as Calamagrostis × acutiflora ‘Karl Foerster’ to help support the stems. It prefers fertile, moist but well-drained soil in sun or light shade.

Care Guide:
Divide clumps every 3–4 years to maintain vigour — any time after flowering but spring is preferred. Cut back stems after flowering in autumn. Taller selections may require staking. Symphyotrichum novi-belgii cultivars benefit from good air circulation to help prevent mildew.

Good to Know:
Pollinator-friendly — the flowers attract bees and other pollinators; the central disc turns from yellow to brown once pollinated.
