Viscaria asterias bears drumstick-like heads of small, fragrant, maroon-pink flowers with blue anthers and wine-red bracts. The flower stems rise above basal rosettes of dark green, lance-shaped leaves.

Native to Bulgaria and the wider Balkan Peninsula, it resembles an upright version of thrift (Armeria), but prefers richer, moister growing conditions. Grow it in full sun in rich, moist but well-drained soil. The flowers are also useful for cutting.
