Helleborus argutifolius, commonly known as the holly-leaved hellebore, bears nodding, cup-shaped greenish-yellow flowers in late winter and early spring. This evergreen perennial has deep green leaves with spiny, toothed edges resembling holly.
It provides winter interest beneath deciduous trees and shrubs, growing well in sun or light shade in a sheltered position with reasonably fertile, free-draining soil. The flowers can also be used for cutting.

Care Guide:
Plant in fertile, humus-rich soil with a neutral to alkaline pH. Choose partial shade, or a sunny position where the soil does not dry out, and shelter it from strong, cold winds. Apply a mulch of organic matter each autumn. Once flowering has finished and the plant has been allowed to set seed, cut back the old flowering stems.
