Salvia uliginosa, commonly known as bog sage, bears short spikes of clear sky-blue flowers on branching, mostly bare stems from summer well into autumn. This tall, graceful perennial has slightly leathery, pointed green leaves and is native to the damp grasslands of South America.
Use it towards the back of a border, where its stems sway in the breeze, and try combining it with warm oranges, deep burgundies or clear yellows. It grows best in reasonably rich, moist soil that does not dry out in summer, in full sun or partial shade.
Half-hardy, it needs winter protection in colder areas. Apply a mulch over the crown to help protect the underground shoots.
