Salvia × sylvestris ‘Blaukonigin’, also known as ‘Blue Queen’, bears densely packed spikes of small, vivid blue flowers with purple bracts above triangular, sage-scented green leaves. It forms a compact, bushy perennial with long-lasting flowers that are popular with bees. Remove faded flower spikes to encourage further flowering.
Plant it in groups towards the front of a border for concentrated blue colour and upright flower spikes, or grow it in containers beside a sunny seating area where its aromatic foliage can be appreciated. It grows best in reasonably fertile, moist but well-drained soil in sun or partial shade.
