100% Peat Free Pollinator Friendly RHS Award of Garden Merit

Nepeta racemosa ‘Walker’s Low’, commonly known as catmint, bears deep blue-mauve flower spikes on dark stems above silvery, aromatic foliage. A vigorous, clump-forming perennial, it flowers from early summer; cut it back hard after the first flush to encourage fresh growth and a second display into autumn.

Its ultimate size depends on the soil. In poor, well-drained conditions it stays compact at around 60cm; in richer ground it may reach 90cm, with a more relaxed, open habit. Plant it towards the middle of a sunny border, allowing room for its spreading growth.

  • Care Guide:

Grow in well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. After the first flush of flowers, cut back to keep the plant compact and encourage another display. Leave the old stems and foliage over winter to provide hibernation shelter for ladybirds, then cut back hard in spring as new growth emerges.

Lift and divide large, established clumps in spring or autumn to rejuvenate them. To raise new plants, take softwood cuttings in early summer.

  • Good to Know:

Pollinator-friendly. Drought-tolerant once established. Aromatic foliage.

Some Nepeta attract cats, particularly catnip (Nepeta cataria). They may roll among the stems and chew the leaves, so young plants may need protection from their attention.
