Dianthus cruentus, commonly known as field pink, bears clusters of flat, single, blood-pink flowers held like drumsticks above blue-green, grass-like foliage in summer. Popularised by Cleve West’s 2011 RHS Chelsea show garden, this tough, evergreen perennial is easy to grow.
Try it as an individual accent in a rock or gravel garden, where its delicate silhouette can be appreciated. Grow it in full sun in fertile, well-drained, neutral to alkaline soil. Trim in spring to maintain a neat shape and again after flowering to encourage fresh growth at the base.
